Processed foods are becoming ever more popular as more and more people find them more convenient and less time consuming than regular cooking. And indeed, it’s very easy to just go to the supermarket, pick up a package or two of something, head on home, shove it in the microwave, let it cook for 5–10 minutes, and voila… you’ve got dinner ready in no time and little hassle.

But processed food isn’t just convenient; it’s also less healthy than fresh or regular cooked food. The main reason is that food loses a lot of its nutritional value in the manufacturing and packaging process and the manufacturers are forced to put a lot of additives and preservative chemicals to give it as much shelf time in the supermarkets. One more thing to consider is that processed food is often shipped from other countries which may be less vigilant as to how healthy food should be. For instance, processed food which is made in Chine is raising a lot of concert in America and Europe.

So, what should you avoid? Here is a list of processed foods you should avoid:

  • Ready made dinners
  • Instant soups and dishes
  • pocket sandwiches
  • Potato chips
  • Cheese snacks
  • Snack bars
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Frozen meats
  • Canned pasta
  • Canned Food
  • Frozen Pizzas
  • Fish Sticks
  • Frozen fruit salad
  • Frozen or refrigerated vegetables
  • Foods with processed sugar
  • Anything with edible colors
  • Sugary beverages
  • Non fresh juices

Make sure to read the ingredient label you buy and make sure it is low in processed sugar, sodium, chemicals you can’t even pronounce, saturated or trans fat, and additives. Also check the expiration date and buy as fresh as you can.

Remember, you are what you eat. Make sure to eat as healthy as possible.
